Nudges

Hello again.

Thanks to everyone who has left comments on the last posting. Every so often over the past few months, a new comment from you, waiting for me in my inbox, has reminded me about my creative life and nudged me in the right direction - just what was required!

What can I say about my absence? It's that old work-life balance chestnut again. My natural rhythm seems to be to work creatively in fits and starts. I'm relaxing into that notion

My desire to create also seems to be influenced by the physical space around me. I am a great spreader of things around the room while I am working, and I've felt a bit cooped up. This observation has influenced the decision to repaint my living room (aka my work space) pure white. A new sandy-coloured carpet is about to be laid tonight to complete the transformation. The idea is to create surroundings more conducive to getting 'in the zone'. More on this later.

I have returned my attention to another love - making translucent paper constructions. I am fascinated by the idea of strength, fragility and contained space. It also enables me to work out ideas for 3-D weavings. I'll say more soon, and add photos.

Hello Steve! Glad to see you again. I understand the work-life balance struggle and sometime one must just take of yourself. I likfe hearing about the paint and carpet - sound like a nuturing move. Looking forward to the photos!

Hello Jennifer
Thanks for your message. Glad to be back again! The room is looking a lot better, all white with a sandy coloured carpet. The process of re-furnishing the room from its empty state was really useful. I was able to consider what was required and what was clutter..

Hello Steve, the Swedish seem to use paper yarns for weaving "cloth".

Good for you that you got around to another blog post!

I have included you in my list of UK weavers who blog that you can find via a link on my blog, top right. I know you aren't weaving much, but from what I've seen you've got some interesting ideas and you're the only person I think I know with a degree in Tapestry weaving.

As and when you get back to it I'll be interested to see what you're doing. I'm sure that the right workspace makes a big difference. I like white walls.

Hi Dorothy, I like the idea of paper yarns, haven't played around with them yet. They sound quite fibrous. I like using hemp to weave with. Thanks for including me on your blog list.
Yes, having a degree in Tapestry is quite unusual I suppose. I didn't actually weave much when in the Tapestry department - I worked in a lot of other media during my degree years. I decided, many years later, to return to it and give it another go.

The room has now been repainted. And now I am decluttering to get some more head space..

Best wishes
Steve

Thanks for the encouragement anonymous - I'm glad the newer ones show more creativity and originality.. It wouldn't be as encouraging if they were going the other way! Seriously thought, that is good as it shows progression..Thanks for reading.
